Having Tuscany as a neighbour it's hard for Umbria to achieve what
it merits without obligatory comparisons. Those who have already been
in this wonderful region, though, don't think so. Coloured fields
in bloom, green holm-oak woods and yellow sunflower fields, the aroma
of black and white truffles from Gubbio, the sausages of Norcia, the
DOC wines of Orvieto, Torgiano and Montefalco will remain unforgettable
to every visitor.
Umbria is a land of joy for explorers, a land where people practice
Zen with horses.
|
But Umbria is also the land
of Saint Francis of Assisi, above all, of the historic and
present celebrations, Corsa dei Ceri", Festival
dei due Mondi", of music, Jazz Festival of Perugia and
of chocolate Perugina Baci, of craftwork Antiques and terracotta
pots wherever you go and, last but not least, of cuisine. We assembled
some appetisers for you:

Gubbio.
This city likes to celebrate, often and thouroughly. The most
famous celebration is the Corsa dei Ceri, where three enormous candles
of wood filled with wax are carried up the mountain running. In Gubbio
everybody is crazy and those crazy people are even proud of it. This
place owns a real treasure: the Eugubinian tables, comparable to the
Rosetta Stone. We are talking about 5 bronze tables that lead to the
decodification of Etruscan language, they are kept in the architectonically
interesting Palazzo dei Consoli.

This town is as well closely linked to
the aroma of truffles grated paper thin on pasta dishes. Searching
for truffles with original and licensed truffle farmers and dogs,
your guests will search, clean and cook their meals by themselves.
Insider tip: if you walk around the Fontana dei Matti (Fountain of
the Crazy) three times, you'll get the Honorary Idiot of Gubbio diploma.

Torgiano.
This small wine town between Perugia and Assisi is situated on
a lovely hill above the Tiber offering beautiful houses and palazzi
of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. The most important attraction
certainly is the wine museum, il Museo del Vino", opened
thanks to a private initiative of the Lungarotti family. 15 rooms
prepared according to excellent didactic principles leave space to
the history of wine-growing.
|
|
Your guests may then immediately put this newly acquired knowledge
into practise on the vineyard with an exclusive sommelier course,
obviously with wine-tasting!
Insider tip: olive oil tasting is delicious as well!
