Following the legend, this island has been created by chance, when
the furious fire God threw about with rocks. A mystic metaphor but
it fits, Sicily is the island of innumerable volcanos, the land of
three seas, of contradictions and traditions.
Impressive Greek-Roman sites testify a coloured past, wonderful beaches,
fruit plantations and idle small villages determine the present. Sicily
has everything, in abundance.

We'd better not infuriate Typheus, the monster trapped in the depths
of the Etna causing it to erupt again and again with its glowing breath,
and offer you some of our ideas for volcano freaks.

Firework Stromboli.
The seven islands on Sicily's North coast, the so called Aeolian Islands,
all have volcanic origins. Stromboli for example continues to spew
lava and makes all visitors enthusiastic. On special request and for
small groups we organise a night on the volcano guided by a volcano
expert, a seat in the first row for this mystic and impressive firework.
After hot mountains back to cool water, diving through the sea-world
of flying fish, coloured corals only to mention two of the beauties
of the Tyrrhenian sea.

Sleeping Vulcano.
A part from Stromboli also Vulcano on the island Vulcano is
considered to be an active volcano even if it has been sleeping
happily for more or less 100 years now. The smoking sulphur are
proof enough for all visitors to realise that this sleep is treacherous.
A trekking tour guided by and experienced guide leads you up to
the edge of the crater, where you cook your meal over the hot steam.
Down in the valley again you may well hope for a mud-bath in the
safe harbour and to rub away callused skin after a long excursion,
all participants get a pumice-stone taken right from cold volcano
on Lipari, the neighbour island.

Mighty Etna.
This enormous mountain range does not only include the always
active main crater but also more than 200 secondary craters in part
accessible. Its mystic black landscape of cold lava tongues and red
flowing magma gets visitors of all ages enthusiastic.
La Montagna", the mountain, as the locals call it, is climbed
in rented cars driven by the participants themselves or in elegant
old-timers with chauffeur. Obviously we've not forgotten culinary
aspects: in the vineyard regional specialities are served with a good
glass of wine, just harvested on this rich and fertile volcano land. |
